Junior High School Marks America’s 250th Anniversary Through Yearlong Learning

Throughout the school year, West Babylon Junior High School commemorated America’s 250th anniversary with a variety of educational initiatives designed to encourage students to reflect on the nation’s history, values, and what America means to them.
Led by librarian Mrs. Statfeld, the celebration began with a special America 250 book display in the school library and featured Read Across America’s 2026 theme, “Read, White, and Blue – Celebrating 250 Chapters of America.”
Students also explored several traveling exhibits that brought history to life, including New York State Parks’ Enslavement to Freedom and America 250 RevWar, as well as the Long Island Library Resources Council’s Becoming the United States: Colonial America to Reconstruction, developed by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. The exhibits highlighted influential people, pivotal events, and historic documents that have shaped the nation’s history.
As part of the yearlong celebration, students were encouraged to participate in America 250-themed contests and activities that promoted civic engagement, historical inquiry and thoughtful reflection on the nation's past, present, and future.
Through these enriching experiences, West Babylon Junior High School inspired students to deepen their understanding of American history while recognizing the importance of informed citizenship as the nation approaches this historic milestone.
