Reading Comes Alive with Creative Body Biographies

Sixth graders at West Babylon Junior High School recently completed a creative “body biography” project as part of their English lessons. After reading their book club novels — including “Unplugged,” “The Maze Runner,” “Percy Jackson” and “Ungifted” —students selected a main character to bring to life through this engaging activity.
Using a full-body outline, students analyzed their chosen character’s traits and inner thoughts. They included meaningful quotes, physical descriptions, likes and dislikes, accomplishments, strengths, values, goals and challenges. Each section of the body symbolized a different aspect of the character, encouraging students to think deeply about motivation, personality and character development.
The project combined reading comprehension, writing and artistic expression, allowing sixth graders to demonstrate their understanding in a creative and meaningful way. The finished body biographies were displayed in the classroom, showcasing the students’ thoughtful work and celebrating the power of literature to inspire imagination and insight.
