Science Olympiad Teams Earn Top Honors at Invitational Competition

West Babylon’s Science Olympiad teams recently delivered an impressive performance at the Mount Academy Invitational in Westchester. Competing against 34 teams, Team A earned a ninth-place overall finish, with several students achieving medal-winning placements across multiple events.
The following students placed in the top six, earning medals for their outstanding performances:
Second place – Anatomy & Physiology: Addie Eglin and Dheera Misra
Second place – Astronomy: Addie Eglin and Saad Syed
Fifth place – Chemistry Lab: Addie Eglin and Saad Syed
First place – Helicopter: Joel Colas and Julian Cruz
Earlier in the season, West Babylon’s Science Olympiad teams also competed in a national virtual invitational in December, marking a historic achievement for the program. Team A finished 10th out of 90 teams nationwide, earning a trophy and setting a strong tone for the season.
The teams are coached by Andrea Durbin, with assistance from Kerry Reinhart and Loretta Salerno. Looking ahead, students will compete on Jan. 24 at Columbia University, an important preparatory event as they gear up for the Suffolk County Regional Tournament later this month. Top teams at the regional level will advance to the New York State Science Olympiad Competition.
The district congratulates all participating students and wishes the teams continued success as they prepare for their upcoming competitions. (Photos courtesy of senior James Graham.)
