Fourth Graders Bring History to Life with Clay Art

Fourth graders at John F. Kennedy Elementary School are diving into their social studies unit on Native American cultures with a hands-on project that brings history to life. Students learned about the traditions and lifestyles of the Adena, Taíno and Haida tribes, then created clay sculptures representing an item of cultural significance to one of these groups.
Alongside their artwork, students wrote explanations describing why the object they chose held importance within the tribe’s daily life or beliefs. This creative project allowed students to explore the diversity of Native American cultures while strengthening their understanding through art, research and reflection.
