Culture Club Volunteers Serve Community at Mercy Soup Kitchen

Students from the West Babylon High School Culture Club spent a meaningful and impactful day volunteering at the Mercy Soup Kitchen in Wyandanch, where they dedicated their time and compassion to supporting community members in need.
Throughout the day, the Culture Club officers and members worked alongside staff to prepare and serve meals. Students helped make salads, cut and packaged more than 10 cakes, set up tables, and served warm food at various stations. Their efforts provided not only a nourishing meal but also kindness, conversation, and connection for local residents who benefit from the soup kitchen’s services.
Advisor Lorenzo Ruiz emphasized the importance of the experience, noting that the goal was to help students gain perspective and recognize the value of giving back. “I wanted to show them how fortunate we are to have warm homes and food available to us,” he said. “It is powerful to step outside ourselves and support our community. It was incredibly gratifying, heartfelt, and productive for all of us.”
The volunteer day served as a lesson in gratitude, empathy, and service — core values the Culture Club strives to promote through its ongoing work. The school looks forward to continuing partnerships that allow students to engage with and uplift the community.
