West Babylon recent graduate Alex Burkhardt recently completed a new four-week program at Brookhaven National Laboratory called the Brookhaven User Facility Summer School. This unique program brought together a select group of high school seniors, high school graduates and college students as they engaged in authentic, hands-on research utilizing some of Brookhaven’s state-of-the-art facilities. Alex, along with his peers, presented research on the damage caused on silicon from radiation caused by celestial objects such as a supernova. Students in this program were trained and then used Brookhaven’s Tandem Van de Graaf, National Synchrotron Light Source II and the Center for Nanomaterials to conduct their research. Students were given the opportunity to work with renowned BNL scientists as well as participate in various lectures during their four-week stay at Brookhaven.
