Art and Social Studies Collaboration Addresses Civic Issues

Seventh grade students at West Babylon Junior High School recently completed a meaningful art and social studies collaboration, inspired by Native American traditions of using masks to offer protection against adversity. For this project, students selected a current world issue, such as climate change, inequality, mental health or global conflict, and designed a mask symbolizing the challenge they hope to address. The masks, now on display in classrooms, showcase students’ creativity while highlighting their thoughtful interpretations of important civic topics. This assignment also fulfills a component of the Civic Seal of Readiness graduation requirement by encouraging students to engage with and reflect on worldwide civic issues.
